DREAMSCAPE
Exclusively Fashion Magazine:
Tell me a little about how you became a fashion
photographer?
Richard Knapp:
I can’t identify one instance of what made me a
fashion photographer. I have always been intrigued by the
freedom and creativity that fashion allows and inspires.
I have just always had the drive to
create fashion imagery for myself and that has fueled
work.
EFM:
What is your typical day like?
RK:
It starts off with my son Ryder, who is 8 months old,
and a morning person, just like his father.
I usually make some coffee, play with
him til mom comes downstairs, and then the
three of us take a walk on the river behind the studio.
After that it is time for work.
My
evenings usually revolve around a nice dinner with my
family and friends.
EFM:
What gives you inspiration?
RK:
Inspiration for me is more of a mental place to get
to….
It usually comes when I get a little
escape from the daily grind.
A long drive, a nice hike or someplace
where my mind can have the space to wonder.
I definitely spend many hours in museums and on the
city streets.
Life is what inspires the most,
and of course all of the other great
photographers out there…..
EFM:
What do you do in your spare time?
RK:
Surf, Skate, Hike, and oddly enough, take a lot of
pictures…. Many of my favorites are snapshots.
EFM:
How do you prepare for a photo-shoot?
RK:
I have ideas and locations that I always want to shoot
and I try to figure out which one best suits the job at
hand, then it is all about getting everything in order
to allow for the shoot to be a success.
Having all of your homework done so to
speak….
EFM:
What is your favorite camera to use?
RK:
I have been using the Canon EOS 1DS cameras since the
Mark 1.
EFM: You have a studio that is available
for other photographers; can you tell me how did the
idea come about, and how long have the studio been open?
RK:
I really just wanted my own studio.
I found this location with its beautiful
light and I couldn’t keep it all for myself.
It is fun to see others enjoy this
space.
I have been here for a little over 2
years, and if all goes well I will be expanding into the
unit next door someday and I will have perfect bounce
or direct light all year round.
EFM:
What advice can you give to
aspiring photographers?
RK:
Listen to the advice of
others, but always follow you dream!
