Romy is the mother of a 5 year-old son and the
wife of fashion photographer Patrick Mcgreal,
who she says is a “very supportive husband.”
If you haven’t heard about fashion
stylist Romy Frydman you may have seen her work.
Romy has worked as the Contributor Fashion
Editor for Vogue Australia for 8 years.
In her 15 years of styling she has worked
with talented photographers, one of them is her
husband Patrick Mcgreal, who often shoot her
blog ‘Style Me Romy.’
Romy tells me some of the
photographers that she had the most memorable
shoots. “Richard
Bailey, Derek Henderson, Anders Overgaard, Nick Haymes and Maria Mochnacz, she’s fantastic,” Romy
says.
Her
career began studying fashion at RMIT in Melbourne, then
interned at Marie Claire Australia, “for a week, which
earned me the job as Melbourne Fashion Editor.
I was then asked by Naomi Smith (now fashion
director for Vogue and who is effectively still my
employer) to come and join the team at ELLE magazine,
they were great times.
Romy moved to New York City for 5 years where she
freelanced and contributed to Nylon and then back to her
home town to be a Contributing Fashion Editor at Vogue
Australia, “among others things” she says.
Romy says that not many people knew what a ‘stylist’
was. “I
often had to explain my job to people, so I think it was
a little easier, as there were less of us vying for those
limited positions, but we worked much harder.”
Romy says that there were no “style.com, no
e-mailing, oh, ‘I hated that fax machine’.”
Romy
is also a creative director. “I like being a creative
director, it’s just more challenging to sit with my
advertising clients and discuss their presence in the
market and how to improve on it.”
Her favorite Australian designers, which are a
few, she says: “Lover, Friedrich Gray, Ellery, Dion Lee, Therese Rawsthorne, and Jordan Askill jewellery.”
While working in the fashion industry for 15 years; she has
gained much knowledge and skills along the way. “I can
survive with a long ribbon tied around my neck with
safety pins attached.” Romy thinks that assisting an
established fashion stylist is “invaluable.” What
she looks
for in an assistant; “everything I’m not, organized,
prompt, and patient.”
Everyone knows that you have to assist to gain
experience and may make some mistakes along the way.
Romy says that she has made “a few, but if there
was perfection I’d be bored.”
Loving what she does, she never gets
distraught, “I never get down about my job, and a little
stress fuels the adrenalin.”
With her new blog now launched,
Romy shares with me the concept behind ‘Style Me Romy’.
“It’s a visual diary with the answers to questions
I always get asked.
I felt there was so much I’ve always wanted to
share about fashion and the blog is the perfect medium
for this.
It’s a whole lot of insightful advice, sort of mini mag
of fashion ideas.”
Romy tells me in detail her tips and business
advice for aspiring stylists everywhere.
“It is hard work, but it’s definitely a great job.
If I could give business advice I probably wouldn’t be a
stylist.
Its a creative job and you have to love it as the
rewards are few and far between.
But, you meet inspiring people all the way
through your career.
You have to persevere because it’s your passion.
It’s definitely not your average job, but a good
one.”
